What are we hearing from candidates? "I can do this job." A higher number of people are pushing hard to convince us they can do a job they are not necessarily qualified for, or a job they likely would not have been open to a year ago. To be clear, this is not a new sentiment. What's surprising is the higher number of people expressing this. It could be an indication that the market is tightening. What are we hearing from clients? "We can wait." Whether it's a newly created role or a backfill, lately many clients with an urgent need to hire have interviewed seemingly excellent candidates and have not pulled the trigger to hire. The exact reasons for not making the hiring decision vary from not willing to pay incrementally above a stated max salary to a candidate missing one piece of experience. The result is usually going back to the drawing board and a search extending weeks, if not months. This undoubtedly impacts each company's existing employees and the company's performance, but the message is clear, "We know what we want and we're willing to wait." What am I feeling about the hiring market? Accountants are still in high demand. The monthly jobs reports and related figures that are released can be hard to decipher: up one month, down another, what trends mean what? Underlying these figures is what's happening on the ground in our region. I know one thing is certain: hiring for accounting and finance professionals is still strong and there is still a dearth of highly qualified professionals on the market. One just needs to look at any job board to be convinced. This is good news for the job seeker, and acted on properly can be good news for hiring managers as well.
