What are we hearing from candidates?
"Can we wait a bit?" It's year-end audit and tax season, meaning most of the accounting-focused candidates are stretched pretty thin. People are still open to new opportunities, but they are either slow to respond or pushing out engaging until their calendars open up.

"How far is the commute?" We have been pleasantly surprised lately to hear candidates become more and more open to working in-office. However, commute matters more than ever to those open to it. Over the last three years people have gotten used to 20-step commutes vs. 20-minute commutes, so they have drastically decreased their acceptable commute radius from home.

What are we hearing from clients?"
We'd like both" Hiring managers are saying both skill set and personality matter equally more so than in any time in the recent past. This is a slight change compared to what we've seen in this tight labor market over the past couple years where personality fit outweighed a candidate's skills checking most/all boxes. Perhaps many companies have learned how to get by short-staffed during the last 3 years so they're willing to be picky. 

What am I feeling about the hiring market?
Optimistic: 517,000 jobs were added in January, we have the lowest unemployment rate since 1969, and though inflation rose in January there are signs it is still easing. I'm no economist but these figures combined with our 'ears to the ground' feedback from our clients that they're not slowing or delaying their hiring leaves me optimistic about the hiring market in the months to come.
