What are we hearing from candidates? "I'm willing to relocate" - an article from May with the headline 'Relocation For New Jobs Grinds to a Halt' caught my attention and cited some very interesting statistics. The most interesting numbers were that only 1.6% of jobseekers relocated for a new job in Q1 2023 compared to 7.7% in Q4 2018. That trend was a continuation of the large downward trend for the prior 40 years. I decided to put the question of "Would you relocate for a new job?" to my network via a LinkedIn poll, and was surprised at the findings: 65% said 'Yes, for the right job'. What are we hearing from clients? "Being timely landed me the right person" - Our group has seen a larger than usual percentage of clients drag out their decision-making process so far in 2023. However, the clients who have made hiring decisions have done so 10% faster than last year. The feedback we're receiving in this tight candidate market from the clients who are pulling the trigger is that prioritizing a fast interview process and being willing to make a timely decision landed them the right person. Stringing out an interview process and sitting on the decision too long can sour the experience for the candidate or the person can end up taking another job in the meantime. The most successful clients put timeliness first. What am I feeling about the hiring market? The Forever Labor Shortage: by now it's no secret that it's hard to find good-great accounting/finance talent in this market. The general sentiment around this phenomenon has seemed for a while to be something along the lines of "maybe that will change once things get better." As this article points out, however, we're entering what's shaping up to be called the Forever Labor Shortage. In short, large-scale demographic changes over the last 80 years, coupled with large world events like COVID-19 and women's empowerment, point to a predicted decelerated growth rate of the potential labor force over the next ~20 years. It sure seems like it will continue to be hard to find good-great talent for many years to come. ASP Hiring Statistics - 2023 39 - Days to Place (avg.) $175,339 - Avg.
