What are we hearing from candidates?
"Give me a chance." More candidates of late are open to positions that are a bit of a stretch for them even if the compensation is not substantially more (or even lateral or lower in some instances). This is showing us that the last few years of high rates of compensation increases are sinking in with candidates - they're feeling well compensated and now turning their energy towards growth in responsibility.

What are we hearing from clients?
"We like unicorns." Every hiring manager starts their search for candidates looking for the perfect person - the 'unicorn'. In the recent past, we've seen them react relatively quickly to market conditions by modifying their requirements to hire somebody good (not perfect) quickly. This summer, however, we've noticed hiring managers have been highly inflexible in their need as searches continue, not reacting to what the market is providing. Candidates should keep this in mind when applying to open roles and hiring managers can benefit in these conditions by choosing to be more flexible. 

What am I feeling about the hiring market?
"The summer slowdown woes." There are lots of employment and hiring numbers to parse through in any given month. Some numbers show a strong hiring market (participation rate growing). Some numbers show a tough hiring market (continued record low unemployment rate). The figure I'm fixated on this month indicates a bit of a slowdown as small company hiring slowed. This is a new trend compared to the last few months, but I'm chalking this up to the summer slowdown. Many of our clients extended their interview processes due to summer vacations, especially coming out of the last three summers where COVID prevented or shortened many vacations. I'm optimistic this trend will reverse in the coming months.
